Wakatipu Yacht Club sails on Wednesdays and Sundays, with courses set around the Frankton Arm and out into the lake. The trailer yachts often compete in longer distance events to Walter and Cecil Peaks and even as far as Glenorchy at the headwaters of Lake Wakatipu.
We are located near Queenstown, New Zealand, towards the end of the Kelvin Peninsula, across the narrows of the Frankton Arm from Queenstown.
The Island Series weekend to Pigeon Island near Glenorchy caters for those with a cruising interest and is a popular event on the sailing calendar.
The big event of the season is the Donald Hay Classic. This is another weekend event for trailer yachts with a fun race from Queenstown to Kingston, and the Donald Hay Classic itself, a return race from Kingston to Queenstown.
A "Learn to Sail" Program has been operating for many years and is a great way to introduce children into the sport of sailing in a safe and controlled environment.
We consider ourselves fortunate to have one of the most scenically attractive yacht clubs anywhere, with some of the best lake sailing in New Zealand. We enjoy our sailing in a superb environment and whilst always competitive the club's philosophy has all ways been that yacht races are to be enjoyed and won on the water.
Wakatipu Yacht Club is a member of the Southland Yachting Association and is affiliated to Yachting New Zealand the National Sport Body in NZ for the sport of sailing at all levels.
Wakatipu Yacht Club is a non-profit organisation and is operated and organised by members who freely donate their personal time and energies.
